Madeline Y. is a multi-disciplinary artist, instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and educator located in NYC. With a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition, she has fallen in love with songwriting and musical creativity and strives to incorporate this in her lessons. She regularly writes and performs her own solo music in NYC, and has extensive experience writing and performing with rock bands in her home state of North Carolina. In her time at UNC-Chapel Hill she studied Classical Voice under Dr. Eugene Galvin, performed in the Charanga Carolina (Latin Jazz) Ensemble, and regularly music directed and performed in musical theater productions on campus.
Since moving to NYC, she has developed her love of teaching music with School of Rock and The Harmony Program before starting at Soyulla. She has additionally worked as a performer and musician in productions such as The Human Dream Project (by Admiral Grey), Brace Yourself (a new musical by Gian Gibboney and Hannah Morley), and has released her first single May Flowers.
Madeline’s teaching philosophy is rooted in creating a safe and welcoming space for her students. She wants her students to be introduced to music in a fun and engaging way, instilling a joy and curiosity for it that will continue through their life. She caters her lessons to each student's goals and interests, and tries to find the best skills and techniques that will help to reach them. If someone is more focused in Classical music, they may dedicate a lot more time on sight reading, if another is more focused on Jazz or Pop music, they may focus more on chord progressions and improvisation.
She loves to incorporate music composition, music theory, and cross-instrumental/genre techniques as well, creating musically inclined, well-rounded students and giving them music foundations that will let them thrive in their musical journeys!
