Yumi O.

Violin/Viola

Yumi Oshima entered Juilliard Pre-College at the age of 7, one of the youngest in its history. She graduated with a degree in Music Composition and continued composition with John Harbison at MIT while pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Nuclear Engineering.

Yumi earned her master’s degree in viola performance from Rutgers University, studying with Paul Neubauer.

She has performed in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to Radio City Music Hall,  where she won the viola chair three times. Yumi is a core member of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and also performs with NY area orchestras such as Albany and Harrisburg Symphony.  Some of her recent highlights include playing violin on PJ Morton’s Grammy-award-winning studio album, “Gumbo,” performing violin in the orchestra for the Emmy-winning live NBC production of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and performing viola in the premiere of Ellen Reid’s 2019 Pulitzer-prize-winning opera Prism.

In February 2022, Yumi was invited to perform the Mexico premiere of Leandro Espinosa’s Notturno viola solo with Orchestra Sinfonica UANL in Monterrey, Mexico.

Yumi's teaching philosophy is that learning music is like learning a universal language that will be useful for the rest of your life. She loves tailoring teaching techniques and communicating with each unique individual about instrumental and musical concepts. Yumi is inspired by students of all ages and levels and believes that anyone can teach her as much as she can teach them.
