We adjust. The whole point of our matching process is to get the fit right, and if something isn’t clicking after 3 or 4 weeks, we re-match. After 25 years, we know that even great teachers aren’t right for every student.

Yes. Adults are some of our most successful saxophone students. Most adult beginners can play a recognizable melody within 8 to 12 weeks and several full pieces within 6 months. Adults often pick up jazz styles quickly because they bring deep listening experience to the instrument.

Most beginners play recognizable simple melodies within 6 to 10 weeks of weekly lessons and 15 to 20 minutes of daily practice. Within 3 to 6 months, students typically have a small repertoire and can begin learning jazz basics. Saxophone rewards consistent daily practice more than long weekend sessions.

Yes, with reasonable timing. Saxophone is loud but not louder than typical apartment voice volume. Most NYC families practice during daytime or early evening hours, often with a window cracked. Some students use a practice mute to reduce volume by roughly 50%. Your teacher will help set up apartment-friendly practice habits.

You’ll need a saxophone for every lesson. Many NYC families rent for the first 6 to 12 months while the student decides whether to commit. Trusted NYC instrument shops offer beginner alto saxophone rentals on a monthly basis. We recommend renting a serviced student model from a reputable shop, not buying the cheapest new horn online. We’re happy to recommend specific NYC shops once you start.

Yes. In-home saxophone lessons are widely available across NYC. Your matched teaching artist comes directly to your home each week. Studio saxophone lessons are also available at our Manhattan studio.

Most beginners start on alto saxophone because it is smaller, lighter, and easier for young players to support. Tenor saxophone is common starting around age 12 to 14, when students have more breath and arm length. Soprano sax is typically a second instrument, picked up after alto or tenor. Your matched teacher will recommend based on body size and the music you want to play.
