Teaches in English

Mitch is a professional drummer and percussionist based in Manhattan, New York. Born and raised in Lancaster Pennsylvania, Mitch discovered a love for the drums at the age of eleven and had his first private lesson shortly after. In his professional career, Mitch plays a variety of styles but most frequently can be heard playing pop, rock, funk, R&B and musical theater. He has played with bands all over the country and toured on cruise ships across the globe!

While attending Lebanon Valley College, Mitch studied a wide range of styles and techniques. From rudimental snare drum, classical/chamber percussion, and all styles on the drum set. Mitch is thoroughly equipped to teach any styles, genres and levels to aspiring drummers and percussionists. And Mitch is not only a drummer! He graduated with a degree in Audio and Music Production and a minor in Music Business. Mitch uses these skills often in his work, both as a freelance session musician, and an independent music producer.

Mitch believes that music is a tool that we use to better understand and communicate with each other with compassion and humility. As a teacher, Mitch strives to foster a safe environment where students can learn to freely express themselves through music.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can drums actually be practiced in a NYC apartment?

Yes, with the right setup. Most of our NYC drum students use an electronic drum kit with mesh practice heads, which sounds quiet to neighbors and can be played through headphones. Acoustic kits with low-volume cymbals and mesh heads also work in many buildings. Your matched teacher will recommend a specific kit and explain the practical differences during the first lesson.

Can my child learn rock, jazz, hip-hop, Latin, or gospel drums?

Yes. Our drum roster includes teachers across rock, pop, jazz, Latin, hip-hop, gospel, R&B, funk, and metal. Many are working performers in NYC’s club, theater, and recording scenes. We match your kid to a teacher who genuinely loves the styles they want to play.

Do I need to bring my own sticks and gear to lessons?

For in-home lessons, your kit and basic gear (sticks, throne, music stand) live at home. Each student needs their own pair of sticks, and we recommend keeping 2 to 3 backup pairs since they break with regular practice. For studio lessons, students bring their own sticks. The studio kit and pads stay there.

Do Soyulla drum teachers come to our home?

Yes. In-home drum lessons are widely available across NYC, with the student playing on their own kit at home. Studio drum lessons are also available at our Manhattan studio. Many NYC families choose in-home because it removes the logistics of moving sticks and gear across town.

How does Soyulla match families with drum teachers in NYC?

We start with a 20-minute conversation about your goals, the styles you love (rock, jazz, hip-hop, Latin, gospel, R&B, etc.), and your schedule. From there, we identify the teaching artist who genuinely fits and make the introduction. Our 99% teacher-student fit rate is the result of this care.

How long until I can play a real song on drums?

Most beginners can play recognizable simple beats within 4 to 6 weeks of weekly lessons and 15 to 20 minutes of daily practice. Within 3 to 6 months, students typically know multiple groove patterns and can play full songs along with recordings. Drums reward consistent daily practice on a kit, even if just 10 to 15 minutes.

How much do drum lessons in NYC cost?

Drum lesson pricing varies based on the teacher, lesson length, and frequency. Rather than quote a number out of context, we’d rather have a quick conversation about your goals and walk you through a clear, fixed price before anything begins. Most NYC drum students choose 30, 45, or 60-minute weekly lessons.

How much should my kid practice drums each week?

Young drum students typically practice 15 to 25 minutes a day, six days a week. Practice can include short bursts on the kit and pad practice (rudiments on a practice pad without a full kit). Daily consistency matters more than long sessions.

Should we buy an electronic or acoustic drum kit?

For most NYC families, an electronic kit is the practical choice because of apartment noise. Electronic kits with mesh heads feel close to acoustic and connect to headphones for silent practice. Families with a basement, garage, or detached space often prefer acoustic kits. Your matched teacher will recommend a specific kit during the first lesson.

What age can a child start drum lessons?

Drums typically start around ages 5 to 7, once a child can sit on a drum throne, hold sticks comfortably, and follow simple instructions for 30 minutes. Some 4-year-olds do well with a play-based approach. Teens and adults are excellent drum beginners and often progress quickly.

What if the first drum teacher is not the right fit?

We adjust. The whole point of our matching process is to get the fit right, and if something isn’t clicking after 3 or 4 weeks, we re-match. With drums, style chemistry matters a lot, and we take re-matching seriously when needed.

What NYC neighborhoods does Soyulla serve for drum lessons?

We provide in-home drum lessons across Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and parts of New Jersey. Common neighborhoods include the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Tribeca, West Village, Chelsea, Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Astoria, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Long Island City, Riverdale, and many more.
