Shane S.

Piano

Shane is a pianist, composer, and music teacher based in Brooklyn, NY.  He has served as an Affiliated Artist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as well as faculty at the New England Conservatory (NEC) in Boston, MA.  He is a faculty member at NEC's Jazz Lab and staff member at the Maine Jazz Camp. Originating from the North Shore of Chicago, Shane has performed in cities throughout the US, and he appeared at the Panama Jazz Festival in 2017.  His mentors include some of the best pianists and improvisers in the world including Fred Hersch, Anthony Coleman, Bruce Brubaker, and Ran Blake who premiered Shane's original composition Bright at the Kitano with vocalist Sara Serpa in 2016.  In 2015, Shane received the Tourjée Alumni Scholarship Award from NEC where he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Jazz Performance.  Shane is a member of Petite Feet, an experimental ragtime trio and the ensemble-in-residence at NEC’s Jazz Lab. Pianist Ethan Iverson calls Nude Piano: Iconic Rags of Scott Joplin, the trio’s debut record released July 4th, 2019, “an engaging surprise.”  

 

Shane is a passionate and dedicated teacher who believes that it is his duty to help people of any age tap into their inner artist. He believes that learning in the arts transfers to all other areas of life. He makes learning music fun and offers a diverse wealth of musical knowledge, providing his students with a well-rounded education. He teaches all ages, levels, and styles.
