Steven is a trumpet player, vocalist, and pianist based in NYC, hailing from Broussard, Louisiana. His formative years in music were shaped by studies of orchestral and cornet solo music which led to solo performances of virtuoso works such as the Hayden Trumpet Concerto and Carnival of Venice with the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14. Before attending the acclaimed Eastman School of Music on a generous Howard Hanson Scholarship and George Eastman Grant, he racked up many achievements, being invited to study with Ryan Anthony (Canadian Brass) at Sewanee Summer Music Festival, placing 1st in Honor Band and All-State all four years of high school, winning the Gulf Coast Trumpet Competition, placing second at the National Trumpet Competition, and winning the John Philip Sousa award.

At 19, he was the youngest Lead Trumpet for the Carnival Spirit Show band, and then moved onto leading Vagabond Swing on national tours double billed with acclaimed acts such as Robert Glasper, Beats Antique, Garage A Trois, and more.  After touring across the United States, Europe and Australia, he spent eight years in New Orleans where he played major stages such as Preservation Hall, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Festival International de Louisianne, and French Quarter Festival.  From there he worked with several Internationally recognized acts such as Kumasi Afrobeat Orchestra Feat. Tony Allen, Roamin’ Jasmine, & Djoukil Swingtet.  Since arriving in New York, he has graced the stages of Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, 54 Below, Capitale, Govenor’s Island, Chelsea Piers, among others both leading his own band as Steven Paul and as a sideman with the Hot Toddies Jazz Band, Avalon Jazz Band, Sedi Donka, JChris, Hank Lane Entertainment and others.

In addition to his international freelance work, Steven also regularly serves the music ministry of The Parish of Calvary - St. George’s in the Gramercy & Stuyvesant Square- area of Manhattan.

Steven believes that music is a lifelong pursuit, offering endless avenues for exploration and self-discovery. Drawing from a rich pedagogical lineage and real-world experience as a freelance musician, he brings a balanced, scholarly approach to trumpet instruction that honors both tradition and innovation. Steven's goal is to help students build a strong technical foundation while nurturing their unique voice and artistic identity.
